Haptic Morphologies
Nicholas Moenich - Matt Nichols

Opening Reception: March 4th, 2016 | 7-10 PM

MOUNTAIN is pleased to present the gallery’s second exhibition “Haptic Morphologies”. This two person exhibition brings together the sculptural work of Nicholas Moenich (Brooklyn) and Matt Nichols (Los Angeles). The diverse pairing of works incorporate a material exploration of surface texture and structure. Utilizing both traditional and non-traditional sculptural materials (epoxy clay, mdf, rubberized plastic) the works on display take on an uncanny character. The work pulls you in while simultaneously conveying an essence of ruin and decay.

Nicholas Moenich’s undulating forms are built up from a composite of epoxy clay and pigment. The accumulation and subtraction of material lends a rhizomatic quality to the process of sculpting. The surface is sanded down to create a smooth finish with dalmatian-esque camouflage patterns. The organic shape of the sculptures contrast with the alien surface of layered black and white. Matt Nichols’ practice is largely responsive and frequently referential. He often pulls from art history, popular culture, and personal experience while using industrial materials to create objects that serve as a familiar and meaningful point of reference for the human psyche.
